Apple pushed Siri AI beyond English on Monday, and it did not start small. With iOS 27.2, released October 26, 2026, the revamped assistant now works in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. That’s five new languages in a single update, just weeks after Siri AI launched in English only in September.

A French speaker in Montreal, a Spanish speaker in Texas, a Japanese speaker in Tokyo and a Portuguese speaker in Sao Paulo can now ask the same assistant to dig through their messages, photos and calendar and act on what it finds. Apple describes Siri AI as “profoundly more capable, conversational, and personal” than the old Siri, and language support is what turns that claim into something most iPhone owners outside the English-speaking world can actually test.

That’s a big jump.

Siri AI in five new languages: what changed

iOS 27.2 is the first major update to iOS 27, which arrived in September, and the language expansion is its headline change. Siri AI is available in beta across the 27.2 releases, which also cover iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and visionOS, and it requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language. On iPhone, that means iPhone 16 models and later, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The update is available for all iPhones able to run iOS 27, including the iPhone Duo.

Apple did not stop at five. The company said Siri AI will add Chinese (Traditional), Norwegian, Turkish and Vietnamese by the end of 2026. If that schedule holds, Siri AI will cover 10 languages before the year is out. Watch owners get the same expansion: watchOS 27.2 extends Siri AI to the same five languages, with faster responses on the watch. On iPad, selecting text with a trackpad or mouse now offers a pop-up to “Ask Siri,” alongside Writing Tools options such as rewrite and proofread.

What Siri AI can now remember and find

Language support is only half the story in 27.2. Apple also gave Siri AI a better memory and a wider set of sources to search, and those changes apply in every supported language.

Siri AI can now recall past conversations. Ask it about something it told you before, like the restaurants it recommended last week, and it can pick up the thread instead of starting from zero. It can also draw from more sources to answer a question, including photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, voicemails, Safari history and Reading List entries. In practice, that means a question like “when did Maya send me that photo?” or “who was on that dinner invite?” has a better chance of getting a useful answer without you opening three apps to check.

Apple paired that wider access with two controls that users will probably notice fast. Excluded Apps lets you choose, from one setting, which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access. Granular text selection lets you select and copy just part of a Siri response instead of the whole block. Both read like answers to the obvious worry about an assistant that can see more of your phone: if Siri AI is going to remember more, you should be able to tell it what to ignore and take only the part of an answer you need.

Where Siri AI still is not available

Not everyone gets Siri AI with 27.2, and the gaps are worth stating plainly. Apple’s release notes say Siri AI is not available in the EU or mainland China. That means a French speaker in Paris still can’t use it, even though French is now a supported language, while a French speaker in Canada can. Apple has not given a date for EU availability in the 27.2 notes, and the company is still working through regional requirements there.

Age is another cutoff. Siri AI is not available to users under 13, according to Apple’s rollout details. And some features may not be available in all regions or languages, so a user in Tokyo and a user in Mexico City may not see identical behavior on day one. Apple also warns that some Siri AI capabilities rely on server-side models with daily usage limits, with expanded access offered for a fee, a detail heavy users should watch as they lean on the assistant more.

The question for Apple is how fast the EU gap closes and whether the next four languages arrive on time, because both will decide whether Siri AI feels like a global assistant or an English-plus-a-few-languages one.

What else is in iOS 27.2

Beyond Siri AI, iOS 27.2 carries the usual mix of smaller changes. Profiles arrive in the Apple TV app, so different people using the same device can keep their own Up Next queues instead of wrecking each other’s recommendations. Apple Music gets a new icon and branding. In the EU, iOS 27.2 introduces an alternative expanded prompt for App Tracking Transparency. USA Today also notes that iOS 27.2 supports SynthID, an AI verification tool that can help identify whether an image was generated or modified with Apple’s AI image generator Image Playground or in the Photos app.

Why this matters for iPhone owners

Siri AI’s language expansion won’t settle the debate about whether Apple is ahead or behind in AI. What it does settle is simpler: Apple can now ship its assistant to hundreds of millions of non-English speakers, and it can do it with memory, personal context and onscreen awareness built in, not bolted on later. That changes the test. Until now, most reviews of Siri AI came from English-speaking users in the US and a handful of other markets. Now reviewers and regular users in France, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Portugal, Spain and Spanish-speaking parts of the US get to judge it on their own terms, in their own language, with their own names, places and slang.

Apple solved the language problem in 27.2. The regulatory problem in the EU is still open, and it may take longer than a software update to fix.
